TEXARKANA'S PUBLIC ART PROJECT
Bridging TEXAS & ARKANSAS
A community love locks structure in the heart of downtown — where neighbors, lovers, friends, and visitors from both sides of the state line attach a lock as a representation of their commitment to each other. This project was created as a symbol of unity between our twin cities and represents our dedication to working together for the common good.

THE TRADITION
A GLOBAL HISTORY
Love locks have appeared on bridges and public structures across every continent. Here's how the tradition evolved from folk custom to worldwide phenomenon.
EARLY ORIGINS
The tradition traces to early 20th-century Eastern Europe, where padlocks on bridges were said to "lock in" lovers' commitment by closing the lock on a public bridge or gate and throwing away the key. The practice spread through local custom before gaining broader visibility.
Pont des ARTS & BEYOND
By the 2000s, Paris's Pont des Arts bridge became the world's most famous love locks site, inspiring similar installations on bridges and railings in Rome, Seoul, Moscow, New York, and hundreds of other cities. The tradition became a universal urban ritual.
FROM RAILING TO ART STRUCTURE
Communities began commissioning purpose-built love lock structures — freestanding frames, archways, and chain-link sculptures — turning a folk act into intentional public art. Texarkana Love Locks follows this evolution, designed deliberately as a symbol of unity and commitment within our two-states community.
WHY THIS STRUCTURE EXISTS
ONE LOCK. TWO STATES. ONE COMMUNITY.
The concept is a product of Leadership Texarkana's class of 2026 Downtown Project Team. Their vision for this project was something tangible that would attract visitors downtown and capture the spirit of the community.
Every lock added to the structure tells the same story. Each person's commitment to their neighbor, their community, and their city is what makes Texarkana grow. Over time the installation becomes a living record of unity reminding us that what connects this community is stronger than any boundary- and what's good for our community is good for every individual who lives here.
HOW
TO
ADD
YOUR
LOCK
STEP 1 — GET YOUR LOCK
Choose any padlock — combination or keyed — that fits through the chain-link or rail of the structure. Engrave or mark it with names, a date, a message, or leave it plain. Local hardware shops near downtown carry suitable locks.

STEP 2 — VISIT THE STRUCTURE
Find the Texarkana Love Locks structure in the downtown district. It is a publicly accessible installation open during all daylight hours, seven days a week, at no cost to visit. Bring your lock and, if using a keyed lock, your key.
STEP 3 — ATTACH YOUR LOCK
Clip or thread your lock through an open link on the structure and close it securely. Position it anywhere you choose. Once locked, it's yours on the structure permanently.
STEP 4 — RELEASE THE KEY
For keyed locks, the tradition is to discard the key — toss it or keep it as a keepsake. The discarded key symbolizes a bond that cannot be undone.
STEP 5 — SHARE YOUR MOMENT
Photograph your lock on the structure and share it. Tag the project so the community can see the installation grow. Use #texarkanalovelocks on social media.
There are no rules about who can participate. Locks are added by couples, families, friends, neighbors, and strangers passing through. The structure belongs to everyone.

COMMON QUESTIONS
FAQ
Everything you need to know before your visit — lock types, rules, accessibility, and what happens to the locks over time.
What kind of lock should I bring?
Any padlock works — combination locks, keyed padlocks, or decorative locks. The structure is chain-link and open-rail, so the lock's shackle just needs to fit through an open link. Mini padlocks (20–30mm) are the most common choice and easiest to position.
Is there a fee to participate?
No. The Texarkana Love Locks structure is free public art. There is no fee to visit, no fee to attach a lock, and no registration required. Just bring your lock and show up.
Can I add a lock for a group, family, or friendship — not just a romantic couple?
Absolutely. The structure is designed to represent all forms of unity — romantic, familial, civic, and communal. Families, friend groups, coworkers, and community organizations are all equally welcome to add a lock.
What happens to the locks over time?
Locks are left permanently on the structure. The installation is designed to accumulate locks as a long-term public record of community participation. Locks are not removed except for structural maintenance reasons, and the project plans to document the installation as it grows.
Is the structure accessible to visitors with mobility needs?
Yes. The structure is located on ground level with accessible approach paths. Visitors do not need to climb or navigate steps to reach the lock surface.
Where exactly is the structure located?
The Texarkana Love Locks structure is located in the downtown district at the Texas–Arkansas border at 330 N State Line Avenue, Texarkana, Arkansas.
